http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=why-people-believe-conspiracy-theories

We often believe in conspiracy theories because we don’t always trust modern science. Because there is a small section to a truth that is unknown, we often try to find an explanation to that. This small hole is often the start of great conspiracy.

Harmful stereotypes

Germany loves to invade Poland

Irish are all drunkards

America is fat and lazy

Deductive reasoning

Men are humans, I am a man, therefore I am a human.

2 key assertions

True set and a subset of the true set. The subset is proven trues because it is a section of the true set. Validity is a states the appears valid because of other factors that make it look true.

Premise: Iowa is allowing the blind have gun

Conclusion: It is a bad idea but legal

Their position is valid. I would entirely agree that it is a bad idea to give the blind guns.

Syllogism

If I am sick, I will miss school

If I miss school, I will miss homework

If I am sick, I will miss homework

Invalid deduction

Tomatoes are red

Zach is Red

Therefore Zach is a tomato

Inductive vs Deductive

Deductive is top down reasoning

Inductive is bottom up reasoning

I do not remember if I have ever used inductive reasoning.

Classical induction

Gravity is a constant. It actually varies based off of the latitudes of earth.

Analogical Reasoning

I don’t remember using analogical reasoning. But if I did I would certainly trust myself.

Classification

I usually classify based off of subject and contents of the books. On my book shelf I have a section for car books, children’s books, and magazines

Dangers of stereotypes

http://www.oprah.com/oprahradio/The-Danger-of-Stereotypes

I think that as an American I have some stereotypes that are left over from the wars we have been in. WWII would have the greatest impact on these. We still mock Germans because of WWII.

POST ON YOUR BLOG (remember –these could be articles, videos, etc.). Respond to them, trying to discuss the knowledge issues/implications (who s making the claim and what is their justification? What are some problems? Some implications?)

Understanding the brain is a bit like a self-replicating machine, where at this point in time it is darn near impossible. Many scientists feel that it will continue to be impossible. We have a deep understanding of how computers work despite them being for the most part quicker than the human brain. When we compare the brain to a computer; all we need to understand the brain is the basic building block. The process of learning how the brain works is much like learning math, a child starts with simple addition and then some 10 years later is able to do incredibly difficult equations. Humans have the ability to make comparisons that simplify challenging concepts.  From that we can make the task of understanding the brain, much more possible.

In nature patterns are found almost everywhere and the brain is merely a piece of nature. “Neuroscientists noticed long ago that the structure of the brain’s outer layer, the neocortex, is remarkably uniform, made up of repeating units, like transistors in a microchip. Estimates of what this basic unit might be vary – from a single neuron up to tens of thousands – but all are relevant as they are likely to fit into a hierarchy whose functions become increasingly complex and abstract as you move up it. (2)” We have already found some common patterns.

Language as WOK

“Man is the animal that speaks. Understanding language is thus the key to understanding man” – Thomas Szasz

I believe that this quote is true. With language one can understand each other. It is the basis of communities. with communities we get specialization which leads to innovation.

How many arguments turn out to be about the meaning of words?

I have found that many arguments start from the meaning of words. Many words have different meanings. There a loads of words that are pronounced and sound similar to other words. The difference between two people who speak different languages is often a cause of conflict.

Blog questions

1. How much could you know about the world if you had no language or means of communicating with other people?

I believe that you could know very little without communicating with others.

3. Try to define as precisely as possible these words: a. triangle    b. love     c. table  What is the difference? Which was easiest to define?

A triangle is a shape with 3 sides and angles that equal 180 degress

Love is an emotion the consist of desire and a sense of protection

A table is piece of furniture with a flat surface. It is used for work or storing goods.

Love was the hardest to define and a triangle was the easiest.

6. Do you think a robot (or Siri) could use and respond appropriately to language? What differences would it make in real life if that were the case?

Siri does have her comedic points. If you swear at her, she will get mad. This can be bad if you have a thick accent and a short temper. When they do not use similar language to what we use, many will get short with her.

8. Many jokes are based on ambuguity…can you give an example?

WHAT IF THERE WERE NO HYPOTHETICAL QUESTIONS?

ONE TEQUILA, TWO TEQUILA, THREE TEQUILA, FLOOR…..

IF A PARSLEY FARMER IS SUED, CAN THEY GARNISH HIS WAGES?

9. When Bill Clinton entered the White House in `93, his wife Hillary wanted to be known as “Presidential Partner”, not “First Lady”. What is the difference in connotations? If a woman ever would become president of the USA, what do yo think would be an appropriate title for her husband?

Presidential partner has more of a tone of her providing assistence and ideas. The title for the president’s husband could be “chief of house.”

10. Birds fly and planes fly. Since fish swim, why don’t we say that submarines also swim? What do submarines do?

Submarines are a naval vessel. because a submarine is a boat or vessel; they navigate the seas.

Grammar Nazis can be unpleasant to deal with. Language is an exception invention of man.The whole process of how words were learned was very interesting. Many say that the learning of language is exponential.
